Sam Vimes' life is changing. The Watch is bigger than it has ever been, the city is growing, and he is about to become a father. But all that is put in jeopardy when a freak accident during a chase transports him back in time...thirty years ago. He is contacted by the Lu-Tze and the Monks of History for a difficult task: impersonate his old mentor and teach young Sam everything he knows so that the future will happen. But Vimes remembers what is going to happen: this is the old Ankh-Morpork and the old Night Watch after all.
