Each of these sections remixes and satirizes classic Sword and Sorcery genres tropes and texts that were very popular in the seventies and eighties. The overall plot introduces us to the failed wizard Rincewind, a cowardly loser who has the worst luck in the universe and only knows one spell that he cannot say for fear of what it does. He is coerced by the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork into becoming a guide/protector for Twoflower, the Discworld's first tourist from the Counterweight Continent, little knowing that this job will lead him on a journey to the literal edge of the Disc.

\n\nWyrd Sisters follows a similar plot structure to Macbeth from the perspective of the three witches, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick in the small kingdom of Lancre. When King Verenice is murdered by his cousin Duke Felmet, after his ambitious wife persuades him to do so, the witches must smuggle the heir to the throne out of the kingdom and wait for him to fulfill his destiny, which just happens to be in the company of a traveling group of theater players. But when the Duke reveals himself to be anti-witch and the kingdom itself begins to wake up, the witches must take matters into their own magical hands...or broomsticks.

\n\nMort is an unwieldy and overly enthusiastic teenager who is unsuited to his family's farming business. His family attempts to get him an apprenticeship, but the only person who shows up to take him on the day of the apprenticeship fair is a living skeleton with a cowl and a scythe, Death of course. Death takes Mort to his realm where he meets Death's adopted daughter, Ysabell, and his crusty butler Albert. After many weeks of taking care of Death's horse—Binky—and watching Death assist those who have died along towards their own personal afterlife, Death decides to take a night off and Mort is finally given the chance to step in and do the job himself. Only, things don't go as planned, and reality itself might now be unraveling.
